Boohoo broke advertising rules!
Viewpoint: Jameela Jamil on why airbrushing should be illegal
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-46349307
This article talks about how the actress Jameela Jamil believes that airbrushing should be illegal. She believed this because it weaponizes and predominantly goes against women. She believes that airbrushing is the cause to many problems in the media and within our culture and society today. She also stated that she 'suffered from eating disorders as a teenager so knows how damaging "perfect" images in magazines can be.
Jameela also believes that filters and digital editing also have a contributed to the fact that women end up turning to dangerous options such as needles, surgeries and extreme diets that can often lead to eating disorders.
My personal opinion:
I personally believe that airbrushing and photoshopping images has put a huge stigma and pressure on young individuals in todays society about body image and being the stereotypical 'beauty'. However, I also believe that if airbrushing and photoshop are used in the correct way and in minimal amounts they are both brilliant pieces of new technology that help thousands of companies bring in customers and bring an income in. Airbrush is often used on women and models today to remove or hide spots, rinkles, stretch marks, dark circles etc.
Commenting on her opinion on filters and digital editing I disagree with. Instagram, one of the biggest social media platforms today is known for uploading photographs and being able to edit them in the way you would like to. I believe that filters and digital editing should also be seen in a positive light as it can often make an individual feel and look better.
- One of the biggest online clothing websites broke advertising rules by showing viewers 'misleading promotion'
- Boohoo stated 'it was never its intention to be misleading'.
- The ASA clearly stated a rule that companies cannot advertise misleading time limited sales.
