Christian Dior resort 2020 collection
The Christian Dior 2020 collection was shown in Marrakech in an outdoor fashion show.
Maria Grazia Chiuri collaborated with several African artists on the common ground collection. Marrakech is in the DNA of the brand which is why they decided to show it in this particular place. The collection being shown was a luxury collection that showed globalism and culture. The fashion show really celebrated and showed the culture massively, however I believe that it could of done more.
Dior decided to light up the whole runway with hundreds of floating candles, fire pits and there was a surprise performance by Diana Ross at the end of the show. The theme was 'Common ground' which was shown through the collection of African artists. Through many of the collaborations shown the aim was not to exploit Moroccan culture but to celebrate it and bring its artists perspective to the historic fashion house.
The image below shows 3 of the models wearing three of the dresses shown in the fashion show in Marrakech. The designs of the dresses are beautiful and really connect with the atmosphere surrounding the show. They also work really well of the Moroccan culture. They are sort of mysterious looking. I personally think the dresses themselves are beautifully designed and work really well as a collection. The fact that the show was based in Marrakesh, the artists and culture really did help to inspire and create the collection as a whole!
Wearing print head to toe is incredible, however 'Dutch wax' is the product used and it has a multicultural past that involves Asia, Europe and Africa. The authentic wax prints also symbolize luxury from the highest level. Some of the pieces within the collection were done and made in 100% African wax. They were made from cottons grown, spun and printed all in Africa.
This collection is supposedly an insistent vision of a global feminism accessed through fashion. Christian Dior was able to show this through the 2020 collection in Marrakesh. Maria Grazia Chiuri aimed for appreciation not appropriation.
