This is because they may feel comfortable around this people and know them well. An example of formal communication would be in a work/education environment or job interview. An individual is likely to communicate formally during a job interview. This is because they are trying to sound professional and polite. Informally talking to someone can be seen as more serious. Both informal and formal communication can also be seen by someone's body language, facial expressions, gestures and so on.
