Racism in fashion
There have been so many cases where brands have been accused for being racist or selling products that come across as racist. It has recently become much more of a problem as racism has become a more spoken subject and a much more serious issue within our society today. Fashion today is huge about creativity and being able to push boundaries, however many brands are often taking it that one step too far, to the point where individuals are starting to take offense.
Prada -
Prada sold a monkey figure key chain alongside a lot of their handbags/purses. This is one of the latest cases that comes across as racist and exploitative. Prada have decided to stop selling the monkey that is worth $550 after many people on social media called it out and resembled the monkey as racist and that it dehumanises black people.
Even though the monkey is a huge part of Prada's brand, people have taken huge offense to it. The black and brown version of the monk
ey have got large red lips and a traditional black face. The monkey that Prada use may not have any intentional relation or reference to black people in the real world.
The company stated "Prada group never had the intention of offending anyone and we abhor all forms of racism and racist imagery. In this interest, we will withdraw all of the characters in question from display and circulation.
Gucci -
Gucci produced a black wool balaclava jumper that has an oversized collar that pulls over the chin and nose area. The brand removed the £689 jumper from their stores after social media said that it resembled a black face. This jumper was part of the winter 2018 collection and has a cut out mouth with large red lips on. Many individuals on Instagram posted pictures of the jumper and pointed to the fact that it was black history month in the United States.
Dolce and Gabanna :
The controversy began when D&G published three promotional videos showing a Zuo struggling to eat Italian food with chopsticks. A social media storm happened, when a load of people posted on Instagram that they find the promotional advert quite offensive and derogatory towards Chinese people. The model apologized for taking part in the controversial role and admitted she knew little about the videos before the content was made, she said she was only told it was going to be a 'fun' role.
The model/actor claimed that she never knew that it was going to be any way disrespectful to her country and that she loves her country deeply and is proud to be Chinese!
